To the local villagers, Enoch was considered a fool.
They called him the easy way fool.
If there was an easy way to do something, Enoch would certainly find it or at least spend a fair amount of time looking for it.
He was the local blacksmith and he lived in a delightful little house just outside of the village proper.
He loved his little house but it was a lot of work to keep it tidy and in good repair.
Enoch longed for someone to help him.
One day, when he was out for walk in the sunshine,
he happened upon a bear.
A BIG bear!
At first Enoch was a bit shaken up by the meeting.
But soon he found that BIG bear was quite a congenial fella.
Not terrifically smart but oh so very kind.
Enoch thought to himself, OH my this is a big fella!
I bet he can do a lot of chores and not get tired.
Then Enoch got a terrific idea.
“I live in that house over there,” he said pointing to his home.
“OH,” said Big Bear, “that is a beautiful house!
I have always dreamed of living in such a fine house!”
Enoch smiled widely.
He could not believe his good fortune!
“Well it just so happens that I am looking for a roommate,” he told Big Bear.
Big Bear was overjoyed to hear this news.
Enoch said cautiously, “of course you will have to do chores around the house.”
“I love doing chores,” Big Bear cried gleefully!
Enoch was so happy!
Just the thought of all the lovely naps he would be able to take made him giddy.!
So it was decided Bear would come live with him.
In exchange for doing chores of course.
It did not take but a couple of days for Enoch to learn
that while Big Bear did indeed love doing chores,
he was not very good at them.
His tidy little house was decidedly untidy and in need of repairs!
“This will not do,” he shouted at Big Bear.
“My little house is a shambles!”
Big Bear was very sad that he had disappointed Enouch.
He loved living in the cute little house.
He pleaded with Enoch, “Please don’t send me away.
I will try to do better!
Just give me one more chance.”
It was nap time and he was sleepy.
“OK,” he said to Big Bear.
“You just stay out of trouble.
Why don’t you shoo the flies away while I take a nap?”
Big Bear was delighted to have a way to please Enoch.
Big Bear ran to and fro …
this way ..
and that way …
shooing the flies away.
Soon he sighed contentedly.
All the flies had been vanquished.
Suddenly, to his great horror, he spied something terrible.
One fat fly had escaped his shooing and had landed right on the end of Enoch’s nose.
OH the rude little fella.
Big Bear was incensed.
Reaching down he plucked up a big heavy rock.
He would take care of this one …
once and for all!
And the moral of the story is …
Well DUH …
Never invite a BIG bear to live in your house!
